Dr. James Scott King inducted in the Delaware State University’s Hall of Fame
Dr. King was born in Marion, SC where he attended Johnakin High School.He was the brother of Mrs. Jo Harriet King-Legette. He graduated in 1963 as class Salutatorian. He then graduated from Delaware State University in 1967 with a B.A. in English and History.During his junior at DSU he was one of four student nationwide selected as a visiting scholar at Morgan State University for Political Education.Later he received his M.A. and D.A. in English from Carnegie Mellon University.
After teaching two years in the English and Foreign Language Department and recognized as an outstanding academician, Dr. King was elected Chairperson in 1972.
As a master teacher, Dr. King was aggressive in his advocacy for students and his commitment and outreach to students from all walks of life distinguished him as a student advocate. Dr. King often assisted student financially with tuition, book, food and clothing.
Dr. King served Delaware State University as Vice-President of Faculty Senate (4yrs.); President of Faculty Senate (8 yrs.); Administration Council (12 yrs.); Vice-President AAUP (6 yrs.); Student Government Advisor (12 yrs.); Senior Class Advisor (7 Classes) and Pan Hellenic Council Advisor (7 yrs.).
In 2004, Dr King retired after thirty two years as Chair of the English and Foreign Language Department.Dr King still finds time to devote to the community and alma mater through the Alumni Association of DSU and Omega Psi Phi, the fraternity in which he held membership since 1964. He also continues to enjoy reading. Attending the theater, editing and spending time with family and close friends.
The Induction Ceremony was held on October 23, 2009 at the Dover Downs Hotel and Casino. His life long pal Mrs. Quizella Haynes Lowe attended the induction.
